Here’s what to expect on an Ice Cave or Glacier tour in Iceland

Iceland is the perfect place for you to explore glaciers, ice caves, and glacier lagoons up close! Close to the Arctic Circle, Iceland is blanketed by deep snowfalls yearly, accumulating and compressing into gigantic glaciers that cover great swathes of the country.

As the seasons change, the glaciers change, too, creating unique “blue ice caves” and calving immense icebergs into glacier lagoons. Constantly changing and reforming, the only way to visit an ice cave is by taking an organized tour with expert guides to lead you safely through. Climate change means Iceland’s glaciers are retreating, so you mustn’t miss this opportunity to see these incredible icy marvels for yourself!

What will you discover on an Ice Cave or Glacier tour in Iceland?

ICE CAVES

Iceland’s glaciers are constantly moving, growing each winter when the country is covered with fresh snow, then retreating in the summer warmth. The meltwater runs underneath the glacier, carving out astonishing “blue ice caves” that change shape and refreeze in the winter.

The tremendous forces continuously reshaping Iceland can be seen in these unique ice caves. What you see on your tour will never be seen again because the cave will change shape by the time the next tour arrives! So this is a “one-time” experience that no one else will ever see the same way!

GLACIER WALK

Glaciers are gigantic rivers of compressed ice that form when falling snow gradually accumulates over the centuries, flattening everything in its path from the Highlands to the sea.

You can enjoy an unforgettable adventure on an Icelandic glacier, hiking your way across one of these phenomenal natural marvels!

Our guides will keep you safe as you trace a thrilling path between crevasses kitted out with helmets, crampons, and ropes!

GLACIER LAGOONS

When the glaciers retreat in the summer, something special is created, and you can enjoy seeing it yourself! Glacier lagoons emerge at the end of the “glacier tongue,” its furthest edge. Then, when the spring thaw begins, immense icebergs begin to “calve” away from the glacier, crashing into meltwater lagoons.

We’ll take you to see the world-famous Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón and/or a smaller one by Sólheimajökull too. You’ll enjoy the spectacular sight of immense icebergs sailing serenely around, pulled by the tides and winds toward the sea. It’s a rare treat to see icebergs so close!

BOAT TOURS

Seeing the enormous multicolored icebergs from the shores of the Glacier Lagoon is stunning. But there’s another way of making the experience even more special! You’ll have the opportunity to jump into an amphibious vehicle onshore (after dressing up in protective gear to keep you safe and warm) and sail out on the lagoon.

This is an unmissable opportunity to enjoy the spectacle from close quarters, where you’ll see the varied colors and textures of the icebergs far better than from onshore. The photos you take here may be the best ones you ever take!

DIAMOND BEACH

Just a few minutes away from the Glacier Lagoon is another magnificent Icelandic experience – Diamond Beach. Of course, you won’t find any diamonds here, but you will discover what happens to those enormous icebergs when they meet the pounding Atlantic waves and the fierce winds that cross Iceland.

The icebergs are swiftly sculptured into fantastic ice fragments, lying scattered on a beautiful black sand beach. A walk on this beach will live long in your memory as you tiptoe between one stunning shape after another!

STUNNING VIEWS

On our tours of Iceland’s Glaciers and Ice Caves, we ensure that everyone will enjoy their experience of the incredible icy landscapes. We’ll drive you as close as possible to our carefully selected destinations, so you’re not “out in the cold” for too long! And there are viewing platforms at each location, so you can see these fascinating features from a distance if you don’t want to walk too far.

So even if you’re not participating in a glacier hike or an Ice Cave tour, you’ll still enjoy unforgettable views of Iceland’s stunning sceneries.

Things to remember when you book a Glacier or Ice Cave tour in Iceland

Iceland is also known as the “Land of Fire and Ice,” and this is a place where Nature reigns supreme, so it’s essential to remember that safety comes first. Glaciers are constantly on the move, changing shape with deep crevasses and caves forming all the time.

Our expert guides will have mapped out the safest paths across these frozen rivers of ice, so you can enjoy the spectacular surroundings in complete safety. Of course, that means you must always listen to their instructions and stick to the suggested routes or be ready to change direction if the weather changes. Safety first!

Enjoy close-up views of icebergs, glaciers and walk on Diamond Beach
