The magnificent Snæfellsnes National Park Day Tour

Tour’s Program

Join this outing for a captivating tour of Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. Sometimes called “Iceland in miniature,” due to its many different kinds of geology all in one place, you can’t miss this if you want to capture the true spirit and beauty of the island. This is also a small-group tour of at most 15 people, as we believe this creates a more enjoyable and personal experience for our guests.

You’ll be picked up at your accommodation and swept off to the west. First, you’ll view Snæfellsjökull volcano, wearing a magnificent crown of ice, the highest peak in this area of Iceland and is often visible on clear days from Reykjavik. It is this place that Jules Verne chose as the entrance to the earth’s core in Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne.

Ytri-Tunga is a charming farm with a nearby beach that is a popular seal colony. Animal lovers will enjoy seeing their cute faces as they sunbathe and play in the surf.

Arnarstapi and Hellnar are located in a lovely coastal area with a natural harbor. Beautiful rock formations decorate the coastline, spotted with green-and-yellow moss, and you can stroll along the cliffs here to take in the refreshing sea air.

Look for Lóndrangar, two black basalt columns marking the coast, so tall they can be seen from the road! Djúpalónssandur is another gorgeous black beach, where the air is filled with the sounds of birds circling the cliffs and the ocean waves hitting the sand.

At Djúpalónssandur, you’ll find a curiosity on the beach: four large, smooth stones. They are “lifting stones,” used to measure the strength of fishermen who once worked and lived all along the coasts here.

The biggest one is called Fullsterkur (“Full-Strength”) and weighs 154 kg (340 lbs). Be sure to lift with your knees so you don’t hurt your back on this one! The second one is called Hálfsterkur (“Half-Strength”) and weighs 100 kg (220 lbs). The third one is called Hálfdrættingur (“Weakling”) and weighs 54 kg (119 lbs). Last, you were the shame of your village if you can only lift Amlóði (“Useless”), at 23 kg (50 lbs).

If a fisherman wanted to earn a spot on the fishing boat, he had to be able to lift the “Hálfdrættingur” stone – anything less, and they were not acceptable. Try your strength! Are you ready to join the boats?

At your last stop, Kirkjufell mountain rises out of the green hills, surrounded by trickling rivers. This is one of the most popular photography spots in Iceland, so be sure to get a picture for your own collection!

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the most stunning landscapes in western Iceland! Check the booking availability above by selecting your preferred travel date.

The maximum number of passengers on the tour are 19 which we believe creates a more personal and enjoyable experience for our guests.

Considerate company with a lovely tour

This was the third tour we did in Iceland and the only one that wasn't a disappointment. The other companies wth did toes wth treated the experience like a production line; do this, go there, hurry up, monotone speal, and some things that were poor form like visiting one waterfall in the dark ("but you still got to see it").. Plus very poor communication when things didn't work out. Enough of me venting - this company was so different! They were so responsive with booking even though we were last minute. Our guide Ross was relaxed and friendly, with a good sense of humour and told us lots of insightful information. He also made sure we made the most of the limited daylight available. The scenery is beautiful, much less touristy area and we got to see a lot. Thank you!

best trip in Iceland.

I had a day tour 04 Jan 2018, we went this tour with Roman who is a guide for this tour for us today. Firstly I cannot tell how that was amazing in the letters. we went the basic course route but! we also went some extra spots and Roman managed time for the sightseeing like the daytime of winter Iceland is quite short so he managed the time to see all these courses directly in daytime so we could take some pictures so clearly and after we did that, Roman provided extra time for some extra spots that it is not included on this trip, he gave some time for seeing the big crater and could watch the amazing crater and can see the huge ocean and glacier volcano at the same moment on the top of crater. Then on the way back to the Reykjavik, we talked with Roman every spot where we from or why we come here then the common reason for the Iceland tour was seeing northern light, so he kept checking the night sky to let us know is there have any northen lights from Snæfellsnes area to Reykjavik, that means we had a tour with really good weather so he found the huge and clear northern light so we stopped somewhere on the road and he gave a time for taking picture or watching some lights there, we could watch the northern light through the eyes without camera, also we watch alot of stars in the sky, I did not believe the fantasy star picture of the stars flowing like a water. but after this seeing, I watched this fantastic stars and northern lights by my eyes in real, so I started to believe and cannot forget this tour forever. Also, he stopped one more time before arriving Reykjavik to take more pictures for the northern light, that was totally amazing and want to give 1milion stars to Roman. Thank you so much today Roman and you gave an unforgettable memory to me. 🙂

Excellent tour! Our guide Thor was fantastic and we really lucked out with the weather. Everywhere we visited was breathtaking. The bus was very comfortable, and heated, which was lovely for when we'd be returning from a cold visit. The bus also has USB ports to charge your phone, etc. Plenty of bathroom stops along the way.

I had an amazing time w/this tour. Thor was our tour guide, and hands down the best tour guide we had w/any of the tour companies we used. He was very knowledgable about the area, friendly and very engaging with the passengers, it gave a personable touch to everything. I will never forget how amazing the tour and Thor was.

Guide/Driver was very knowledgeable and humourous. The van was very new with usb plugs which you can charge ur handphone with. The tour can be quite long 11-12 hrs. So got to bear with it.

We had a wonderful day exploring Snaefellsnes with Michal as our driver/guide. The weather was not the most cooperative with intermittent rain and lots of low cloud cover, but when in Iceland, that is to be expected. At least it was not too cold or too windy! We were able to see almost everything in the limited amount of daylight that we had, and we loved all of our stops. There was a strange bit of trickery from the Elves who live in the area, but that only added to intrigue of the day. Fortunately, all turned out fine in the end. Thanks, Michal, for that last bit of help with the phone! We highly recommend this tour!

Great tour!

Our guide Thor made our excursion to this wonderful region both educational and fun. Because he was from the region, we were privy to anecdotes that spanned several generations and our lunch stop was his brother's restaurant. The ride was so comfortable and the scenery so gorgeous that getting there was half the fun. Highly recommended!

I would highly recommend Guide to Iceland to book your tours throughout Iceland. We booked this tour but we were unable to travel to the peninsula due to extremely high winds. Our guide, Roman from Nicetravel was very concerned with the safety of the passengers in the minibus so he quickly organized a different trip which turned out to be incredible! He had to make some last minute decisions and for our safety, we ended up staying together with another guide, Michel and his passengers who were on a similar tour. I was very impressed with Roman as he took safety as his number one priority as our 17 year old daughter was with us. The sights we saw and the experiences we had on the diverted tour were amazing! Roman and Michel led the way on our hikes and adventures and were very knowledgeable about Iceland. I highly recommend this company!

I had such an amazing experience on this tour. Due to weather conditions (high wind speeds) we could not go to Snæfellsnes, our tour guide Roman, along with another guide with the same company, Michael, took us to a different area instead. It was amazing regardless. I was very happy that they took priority on our safety, and drive very well on the ride home, regardless it being 25m/s wind speeds. Definitely recommend!
