Explore Iceland’s greatest highlights on our 4-day tour of the Golden Circle, the South Coast and the Silver Circle, including an exciting opportunity to visit the biggest Lava Cave in Iceland or bath in secluded Canyon Baths!
Take this action-packed four-day adventure package of Iceland’s most spectacular sights, featuring waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, black sand beaches and volcanic craters.
Discover the world-famous Golden Circle, where you’ll see the historical Þingvellir National Park, the awe-inspiring Geysir geothermal area, the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, and the colorful Kerið volcanic crater.
After a night in the “Hot Spring” town of Hveragerði, the second day takes you to the sensational South Coast, where you’ll be wowed by the Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, and Skógafoss waterfalls. Then you’ll see Iceland’s famous black sand beaches as we take you to the fabulous viewpoints at Dyrhólaey and the stunning shores of Reynisfjara.
We’ll return to the capital for an overnight stay before we head into the Viking heartlands of West Iceland! On the third day, you’ll explore the Silver Circle, which focuses on historical Viking Saga sites like Reykholt and Húsafell. You’ll also see the steaming geothermal area at Delidartunguhver and the mesmerizing waterfalls at Hraunfossar and Barnafoss before either descending deep underground for a thrilling lava cave expedition at Víðgelmir or going on a mountain roads via two spectacular canyon to end up soaking in serene, traditional Icelandic Swimming Pools.
The final day features a circuit of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. You’ll see a seal colony, dramatic black sand beaches, towering basalt cliffs, the famous black church Búðakirkja, and Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most magical mountains! Then we’ll return to Reykjavík after a fun-filled four-day road trip!
Your four-day adventure begins with a convenient collection from your accommodation in Reykjavík and a picturesque drive to admire Iceland’s most famous set of treasures!
The Golden Circle is close to the capital, so you won’t have long to wait before the first treat – Þingvellir National Park. The monumental grandeur is breathtaking – gigantic cracks in the Earth’s crust separate the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, so you can walk between two continents here! The early Vikings held their parliaments and summer festivals here, which has great historical significance too!
The next stop lies deeper inland, in the steamy Haukadalur geothermal area, where you’ll see superheated vapor rising into the air for miles around. This is where you’ll find Geysir, the “original” geyser, the first of its type to be recorded anywhere in the world! Strokkur sends powerful fountains of water and vapor shooting high into the sky every few minutes, so you’re guaranteed to grab some fantastic images here!
A few minutes further up the road brings you to one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Gullfoss (the Golden Falls) thunders over thirty meters in a thrilling two-tiered waterfall into a deep canyon. On sunny days, endless rainbows are here, making it a magical sight!
Kerið is our last stop on the first day, where you’ll have the chance to walk around a beautiful multicolored volcanic crater streaked with red earth and green mosses. It’s a fabulous sight and a perfect end to the day.
We’ll stay overnight in the “hot spring” town of Hveragerði.
OVERNIGHT STAY IN HVERAGERDI - town famous for Geothermal Activity
The second day takes you along the flat coastal plains of South Iceland, with towering volcanic mountains on one side and the roaring Atlantic on the other.
Where there are mountains in Iceland, you’ll find waterfalls, and we’ll take you to the most majestic cascades here! First, we’ll stop at Seljalandsfoss, a sixty-meter ribbon of water tumbling beautifully into a deep plunge pool with a vast cave behind it. That means walking behind the waters is possible (in good conditions)! Nearby, there’s a secret waterfall called Gljúfrabúi. Hiding in a rocky green canyon, most visitors don’t even know it’s there, but we’ll show you the way!
Then it’s a short drive to Skógafoss, which some say is the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. Also sixty meters high, its perfect formation and south-facing direction give you the best chance for amazing photos. You can get very close to Skógafoss if you don’t mind getting wet, or climb some steps to see it from the top if you want!
More than a tenth of Iceland is covered with glittering glaciers, and there are more than 250 of them to be explored around the country! Sólheimajökull (the Sun’s Home Glacier”) is one of the easiest to reach and very close to Skógafoss. We’ll bring you here to see this marvel of nature up close. Then, a short walk to viewing platforms will offer fabulous views of the fascinating ice formations and its own “glacier lagoon”!
Iceland is famous for its black volcanic sand beaches, so we’ll head to Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara for a look. TripAdvisor recently voted Reynisfjara at #4 in its “Best Beaches” awards. You’ll understand why when you walk on this picturesque beach, with powerful Atlantic waves and beautiful basalt columns lining the cliffs. Watch the waves, though – they can be dangerous! If the puffins are nesting when you’re with us, we’ll take you for a closer look at these cute creatures!
We’ll then return to Reykjavík.
OVERNIGHT STAY AT REYKJAVIK - short pit stop before heading West
The third day takes you to Borgarfjörður in West Iceland, which has a special place in Icelandic history and is a setting for the famous Saga tales. The Silver Circle features powerful waterfalls, steaming hot springs, and historical locations. We’ll start with a visit to the lovely waterfall Glanni before visiting Deildartunguhver. This mighty spring is the most powerful in Europe, and its fierce output gives hot water and heating to everyone in the surrounding area. Next, we’ll visit Reykholt, one of the most significant historical sites in the country, once the home of Snorri Sturluson, a 13th-century Viking chieftain who wrote much of Iceland’s earliest history.
Further inland, you’ll next see Hraunfossar (the Lava Falls). This mesmerizing waterfall mysteriously emerges from the middle of lava cliffs into the “White River,” stretching far into the distance over nearly a kilometer. Close by is fast-flowing Barnafoss (the “Children’s Falls”), where folktales tell the sad story of two children tumbling into the waters while trying to cross a stone arch over the river.
Then we’ll visit Húsafell, a peaceful wooded area featuring turf houses and “lifting stones” that Vikings used to test their strength!
By choosing Option A you will go on an exciting expedition to the Víðgelmir Lava Cave, where you’ll explore a 1000-year-old lava cave system deep underground.
Packed with fascinating sights, including stalactites and stalagmites, it’s one of the most beautiful lava tunnels in the world. You’ll see its finest features on this exciting 90-minute tour.
OVERNIGHT STAY AT BORGARNES - The Capital of West Iceland
When Jules Verne wrote “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the Snæfellsnes Peninsula was his inspiration. This picturesque 100-kilometer peninsula is also known as “Iceland in Miniature.” That’s because its finest features are packed into this beautiful place.
First, you’ll have the opportunity to see seals sunbathing on the golden sands at Ytri-Tunga, a secluded beach on the southern shores of Snæfellsnes. Then you’ll see the famous Black Church at Búðakirkja. Built by a strong-willed woman who wanted a church here when the authorities said “no,” it’s now a popular destination for weddings for couples worldwide!
Nearby, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of Gatklettur, the “rock with a hole” at Arnarstapi. This moss-covered volcanic stone arch is a stunning sight in all seasons.
Then we’ll circle around Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped stratovolcano that gives “Snow Mountain Peninsula” its name! That will lead us past the towering 70-meter basalt rock pinnacles at Lóndrangar and to the dramatic black sand beach at Djúpalónssandur. Look out for the wreckage of a fishing trawler and the famous “lifting stones” that tested the strength of the locals before fishing trips.
One of Iceland’s most magical mountains is the final stop on your action-packed adventure tour. Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) is famous for its unusual triangular shape and has been featured in several TV shows and Hollywood films.
It’s the perfect place to finish your four-day tour of Iceland’s finest sights! We’ll return from here to Reykjavík!
