The first day of your 5-Day Ring Road adventure takes you on a tour of the Golden Circle, home to three of Iceland’s most famous places.
Your day will start with a convenient pick up in Reykjavík and a short drive to Þingvellir National Park, where the Viking parliaments ruled Iceland for a thousand years. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through here, marking the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, with the gap widening every day!
Next, you will experience the gorgeous gusher at Geysir, a steaming fountain of superheated water that explodes high into the sky every few minutes. Watch where you stand, or you might get wet!
Then we will bring you to Gullfoss, a stunning double-drop waterfall that tumbles more than thirty meters down into a steep canyon, setting off sheets of spray. You might be lucky to see rainbows here too!
Our next stop is the multi-colored volcanic crater at Kerið, famous for the beautiful sight of velvet green mosses contrasting with the bright blue lake and the earthy red rocks surrounding it.
We’ll stay overnight in Hveragerði, which means “Hot Springs”, where you’ll see steam vapour rising from vents in the earth all around the town.
Optional Activity (no pre-booking required):
After exploring four incredible attractions located on the Golden Circle Route you will arrive in Hveragerði, a town renowned for its vibrant geothermal activity. Not only will you have the chance to witness a smaller version of Geyser, but you can also indulge in a relaxing dip in the warm, naturally heated waters.
Be sure to pack your swimwear and end your day in the famous Icelandic geothermal pools! There is no better way to enhance your evening! Hot Tubs are located at or by your hotel and entrance is included.
The second stage of your 5-day tour sees you exploring the unique treasures of the South Coast of Iceland, a lush landscape lined with magical waterfalls, glittering glaciers, towering volcanoes, and endless black sand beaches.
Seljalandsfoss is your first treat – a spectacular cascade of water that crashes more than 60 meters down into a deep pool, carving out a large cave behind the falls. You might even get the chance to walk behind the waters
A short walk away lies Gljúfrabúi, a “hidden waterfall” in a little green rock canyon. Most visitors miss this sight, but we’ll show you where to look!
A short drive takes you to Skógafoss, one of the most recognizable waterfalls in the world, featured in “Game of Thrones”. From 60 meters, glacial waters plunge over the cliffs, producing glorious rainbows on sunny days.
Reynisfjara is next – one of the finest non-tropical beaches in the world, with jet-black sands, giant stone stacks and beautiful basalt columns lining the cliffs. Take care on this beach – the powerful Atlantic waves are faster than you think!
We’ll stay overnight in a remote location on Icelandic countryside.
Optional Activity:
Take a walk with our experienced guides on a frozen river of ice and discover unique ice formations, awesome crevasses and astonishing views. This 3-hour activity is available from April to October, with a minimum age of 8 years. We’ll provide all the necessary safety equipment, including the crampons! All you need to do is wear warm, windproof clothes and suitable hiking shoes or boots.
OVERNIGHT STAY ON THE COUNTRYSIDE
You will stay in a cozy country hotel located just few kilometres away from the Glacier Lagoon
As we head further east, you’ll soon see the frosty wilderness of Vatnajökull appearing in the distance. The “Water Glacier” fills Europe’s largest national park, with dozens of glaciers and active volcanoes buried underneath.
The highlight of your third day is a visit to Jökulsárlón, the “Glacier Lagoon”. Here you’ll be stunned by the sight of gigantic glittering icebergs floating serenely out to sea. Look out for seals here too!
Then we’ll take you to Diamond Beach, where smaller fragments from the icebergs lie scattered on a dramatic black sand beach, sculpted into fantastic shapes by fierce winds and Atlantic waves.
Your next treat is the moody mountain, Vestrahorn, one of the most photographed peaks in Iceland. On clear days, the views from Stokksnes are unforgettable, with dramatic pinnacles towering over sweeping black sand beaches.
Now we are in the Eastfjords, where picturesque twisting coastlines are dotted with tiny hamlets and forgotten farms along the way.
After a photo stop at the Hvalnes lighthouse, you’ll visit Djúpivogur, one of the oldest ports in the country, with more than 500 years of history to explore.
We’ll spend the night in Egilsstaðir, the capital of the East.
Optional Activities
Take a thrilling 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the floating icebergs. It’s your chance to get up close to these glittering giants as the bergs sway around the lagoon.
You’ll jump on an open-top 4WD vehicle and slide into the glacial waters for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with these magical mountains of ice. Wrap up warm and look out for seals!
Soothe yourself in one of Iceland’s best geothermal spas on the shore of beautiful Lake Urriðavatn.
Put your swimwear on, lie back and relax, enjoying extraordinary views of an untouched Icelandic landscape. Geothermally heated waters bubble up from springs deep beneath the lake, giving you a toasty 75-degree soak in the first floating pools in Iceland!
We will start the day by heading north to picturesque Stuðlagil Canyon, where you’ll discover towering basalt columns lining a gushing blue-green glacial river.
Next we will visit Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe! Foaming milky glacial waters thunder down a 45-meter cascade into an enormous canyon.
Nearby lies Selfoss, a gorgeous waterfall that tumbles ten meters into the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, fed by the Vatnajökull glacier.
On our way to Mývatn, we’ll stop at Hverir, a bubbling hotspot of geothermal activity with boiling mud pools and fumaroles that look like you’re visiting another planet!
Then we’ll visit Dimmuborgir, a vast area of bizarre rock formations with jagged lava fields as far as the eye can see. The name means “Dark Cities”, and you’ll see why!
We’ll also stop for photos at the geothermally heated spring at Grjótagjá, a famous setting in “Game of Thrones” with a very colorful interior.
Mývatn is the fourth-largest lake in Iceland and home to countless species of migrating birds. It’s a fabulous place to visit, with lava fields and volcanic craters everywhere you look.
The last stop on the fourth day is Goðafoss, the glorious curved “Waterfall of the Gods”, which has great significance in Iceland’s history. After that, we’ll stay overnight in Akureyri.
Optional Activity
Take a deep plunge into silky, blue waters reach in minerals, that will make you skin smooth and relaxed.
Simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings of lake Mývatn – fourth largest lake in the country.
On the final day of this tour, we’ll leave Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city and head to the village of Varmahlíð, paying a visit to a traditional turf-roofed church at Víðmýrarkirkja.
As we make our way back to the capital, you will also enjoy two extra treats on this tour.
Firstly, we will take you to see the strange spectacle of Hvítserkur, a towering basalt sea stack that some say looks like a giant stone dragon drinking from the sea!
This unique rock formation stands just offshore on the Vatnsnes peninsula, and it’s one of the most iconic sights in Iceland!
Then there will be a stop at the breathtaking Kolugljúfur canyon. A short walk along this steep-sided gorge will bring you to a gorgeous waterfall called Kolufoss.
It’s a short drive back to the city, where you can sit back and relax, remembering all the magical moments from five memorable days on the Ring Road!
Optional Activity
Take a trip out into the fjords to go whale watching! North Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see these massive mammals in their natural habitat.
This 3-hour trip will get you close to these charismatic creatures while they’re feeding. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience!
