Explore the Western part of Iceland. Visit Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls as well as the Deildartunguhver – the most powerful hot spring in Europe where you will bath in Krauma Geothermal SPA powered by its waters. The highlight of this tour is a visit inside the stunning Viðgelmir Lava Cave. All admissions included in the price
You’ll be picked up at your accommodation and swept off west to the historic area of Borgarfjörður – the region that can be regarded as the setting for most of the Icelandic sagas. First, you’ll visit Reykholt historic site. There you can learn a little bit about history of Iceland and see Snorralaug – small hot spring used by local people since 12th century. This place was first mentioned in medieval writings of Snorri Sturluson -the famous Icelandic poet and politician who used to bath there.
Next you will see the great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls spread at a distance of around 900 m. The waters flow out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field that was formed around 1000 years ago during a massive eruption of volcano lying under a Langjökull glacier. Hraunfossar are very often called “Lava Waterfalls”. Rivulets streaming from the lava field create one of the most breath-taking views in Iceland. Just few meters away you will find another interesting waterfall – Barnafoss. Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident tale which is said to have taken place here in a previous century. There was a natural stone bridge over the waterfall, and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-stricken mother had the bridge destroyed.
The highlight of the tour is a visit to a colorful Vidgelmir Lava Cave. Just shy of 1600 meters the cave features amazing colors and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth. During this 1,5 hour long expedition you will have a chance to see one of the largest lava caves in Iceland with its stunning lava stalactites and stalagmites. The area surrounding the entrance to the cave will allow you to realize how powerful eruptions of volcano can be.
After caving expedition we will take you to Deildartunguhver – the most powerful hot spring in the whole Europe. Hot spring provides 180 liters pr second of 100@C hot water! There you can admire power of mother nature while walking around bubbling springs or from the viewing platform.
Last but not least on the agenda for you is a visit to Krauma, the new natural geothermal baths & spa next to Deildartunguhver with admission fee included. There you can enjoy great facilities including five relaxing geothermal baths, a cold tub, and two saunas. A perfect way to end a great tour.

From the start, I knew this was going to be a great trip. Thor was an amazing guide and was very engaging and fun. This was an excellent mix of history, nature and relaxation. The waterfalls are absolutely stunning and the Spa was great. I even stopped in the cafe for an excellent Swiss Mocha. The lava cave was exhilarating, educational and humorous. Highly recommend you put this one on the "must do" list.
My favorite parts were the Lava cave, where the guide tells you about the geology of the rock formations and the krauma spa, with the hot water spring. It is a little catered to tourists, but there is a reason people like it so much. It's very clean, and you bathe outside where there's a great view. I sat with a beer and found myself staring out for at least half an hour. It was serene.
6-03-2019 was a special day for me spent in one of the most spectacular way. Thanks to Nicetravel and his carismatic guide! Thank you for that!
I have already been in caves and also in a lava tunnel but this is indeed impressive! We have been so lucky to be the only ones on the tour, being able to ask as many questions and use our tripods for pictures. The cave is stunning. Additionally to the "normal" stalactites and stalagmites you will find ice stalagmites (certain time of the year: best time in Feb, Mar, Apr)You can accesss about 600m of the cave on a very good floor or a wooden system build into the cave. The colours are magnificent. Our guide Marie was so helpful with answers and side information and made the 1 1/2 tour a real super experience.
A great trip. The information provided by the driver listens with great interest. The vast amount of knowledge remains in memory. A wonderful and atmospheric place - I recommend
Amazing tour, with a great selection of activities and a very good guide!
It is not a trip to be disappointed with. The waterfalls were beautiful our tour guide had a fantastic sense of humour. It was beautiful to hear the stories behind everything. It may seem like a long day but in actual fact you don’t realise where the time gone. At the end of the day we had the lovely spa experience: the water was warm but the air was turning the water in our hair to ice. It is an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Great selection of activities, wonderful photos opportunities, lovely relaxing finish at spa. Guide very friendly and welcoming. Thank you
We took this tour on the 23rd of January 2019. This being a rather new tour, we didn't know what to expect. Turned out to be a great tour, we had such a nice time. Our tour guide Thor was knowledgeable and fun, talking about the Icelandic sagas and music and literature. Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls look wonderful in the winter with a coat of snow and ice. The highlight of this tour was a visit to the stunning Viðgelmir Lava Cave which was a first time my boyfriend and I visited one, Jonathan (I think that was his name) took us on a 1,5 hour tour inside it and gave a very detailed lecture about lava, volcanoes and caves. At the end of the tour we went to the Krauma geothermal baths & spa, at a perfect time as the sun was setting. Spa is not something I would usually do, but this was a great experience, such a wonderful place with a great view of the mountains and not very touristic so our group of 8 people was there basically alone. Just bring your towel and a swimming suit of course (so you don't have to rent it because they aren't included in the addmision ticket and you can save some money). I definitely recommend taking this tour.
I took this tour with my girlfriend on the 23rd of January 2019. Our tour guide for the day was Thor, and he was excellent! He was very interesting, funny and intelligent. He gave us plenty of information and funny stories during the tour and even indulged us with some Icelandic folk singing! This tour allows a maximum of 19 people and there were probably around 12 on this day. I really liked that; it felt very friendly, more like taking a tour with some friends rather than sitting on a huge bus full of people. This is apparently a new tour for Nice Travel, but I think they've chosen it really well. The day felt full of interesting things without being too tiring, so it was perfect in my opinion. We first stopped off in the Reykholt area where we were able to take some nice photos. I was too busy doing this in fact and I missed the Snorralaug hot spring (my fault), so make sure not to do the same if you go! Following that we stopped at the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls which were really beautiful. The paths were a little slippery but Thor had plenty of crampons for people who wanted them. He also told us the legend of the Barnafoss waterfall and we had plenty of time to walk and take photos.Afterwards we went to visit the Viđgelmir lava cave, a truly amazing experience! We were given a tour of the lava tube by a geologist (unfortunately I can't remember his name) who was very witty and intelligent. It was fascinating to get an expert's description of the rock formations and general information about volcanoes, caves, etc. He also taught us the Icelandic titles for certain rock formations, which were very "creative" :)Finally, to finish the tour, we stopped at the newly opened Krauma spa where we spent 2 hours relaxing in their selection of geothermal pools. At this time the sun was just setting, so it was wonderful sitting in 40-degree water with snow all around watching the sun set over the mountains! The spa is quite small which was really nice, it felt like we had it just to ourselves. In conclusion, I highly recommend this tour! I took another tour with Nice Travel and I liked that too. From my experience Nice Travel is a really "nice" tour company and I highly recommend them.
