You’ll enjoy a warm welcome in the places we visit along the “Seven Fjord Road”!

Westfjords Region

Why did “Lonely Planet” recommend exploring the Westfjords?

If you want to discover the “real Iceland,” far away from the well-worn tourist trails, the Westfjords are the place to come. On our tour, you’ll see the best of its breathtaking beauty, driving twisting roads up and down fabulous fjords and over spectacular mountain passes. The views will be unforgettable, with each stop offering new experiences for you to savor. Thundering waterfalls, multicolored beaches, towering bird cliffs packed with puffins, kittiwakes, cormorants, and more – it’s all here for you to discover! Explore the unique natural splendor of Iceland’s “Wild West,” feel yourself surrounded by the elements and become closer to its people and wildlife too!

FJORDS

If you look at a map of the Westfjords, it seems like a giant hand reaching out into the North Atlantic, with dozens of fjords stretching deep between thin fingers of land.

The Westfjords Way is a 950-kilometer road trip like no other. You’ll enjoy astonishing sea views as we make our way along the coastal roads that line these brilliant blue bodies of water close to the Arctic Circle. Look out for the whales, dolphins, and seals that come here in their thousands every year!

WATERFALLS
Wherever you go in Iceland, you’re sure to discover waterfalls lining the route. The Westfjords have some of the most magnificent cascades in the country. The highlight is Dynjandi, also known as “The Thunderer”! You’ll soon see why when we arrive at this magical place, walking up the seven-step “waterfall ladder” to the top! Dynjandi looks like a wedding cake made for giants, and some say it’s the most beautiful waterfall in the country – see what you think! You’ll also visit Fossfjörður waterfall and many more cascades plunging from the mountains along the way!
WILDLIFE

The Westfjords are an untamed wilderness, with very few people living here all year round. That means it’s a perfect place to see the best of Iceland’s natural wonders up close, including its wildlife! The Arctic Fox is the only native land mammal in Iceland, and the Westfjords are where you’ll have the best chance to spot this marvelous creature in its natural habitat. In addition, puffins and other seabirds come here every summer in their thousands to feed and breed. As well as that, the Westfjords are a haven for whales, dolphins, and seals. We’ll take you to the best places to glimpse these beautiful creatures!

SCENIC DRIVES

Enjoy a scenic drive like no other on this epic road trip around the Westfords, tracing a thrilling route up and down the fabulous fjords and over majestic mountains. This spectacular driving route stands out as one of the finest in the world, navigating a thousand kilometers and revealing astonishing views at every turn of the road.

Look inland at the towering mountains and waterfalls, or look out to sea across the bright blue waters of the fjords for glimpses of gleaming glaciers and the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean! This is a driving experience that you’ll never forget!

SANDY BEACHES

Iceland is famous for its volcanic black sand beaches, but when you come to the Westfords, you’ll find something quite different here! That’s because the Westfjords are amongst the oldest parts of the country, where the volcanoes stopped erupting a long time ago.

That means the black volcanic sands you’ll see elsewhere have been replaced by white sands at Barðastrandarsandur or red and golden sands at Rauðisandur. The sands on the beach there are made of pulverized scallop shells! So take your shoes off and enjoy a stroll on these beautiful beaches!

PEACEFUL SOLITUDE

Compared to the rest of Iceland, only a few people live here, and very few visit too. Just over seven thousand people live in the Westfjords, the least-populated part of Iceland. And less than 10% of the visitors to Iceland will choose to visit the Westfjords, sticking to the busy tourist trails around the capital city and the South Coast instead.

That means you’re guaranteed a much more peaceful and relaxed trip when you come to the Westfjords, with fewer people getting in the way when you want to take pictures! So take the “road less traveled” and enjoy the best of Iceland in peace!
